Position Overview:
Manages, coordinates, and establishes priorities for complete life-cycle of projects including the planning, documentation, design, programming, testing and implementation of business solutions designed to meet requirements within prescribed time frames and funding parameters.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Reviews project contract to determine time frame, funding limitations, procedures for meeting project goals, staffing requirements, and allotment of available resources to various phases of project.
  • Oversee project resources as well as the scope and budget management processes to ensure adherence to corporate guidelines and achievement of project objectives.

3 Project Scope Statement The project scope statement  is a key input to quality planning since it documents major project deliverables, the project objectives that serve to define requirements (which were derived from stakeholder needs, wants, and expectations), thresholds, and acceptance criteria.

Thresholds, which are defined as cost, time, or resource values used as parameters, can be part of the project scope statement. If these threshold values are exceeded, it will require action from the project management team. Acceptance criteria include performance requirements and essential conditions that must be achieved before project deliverables are accepted. The definition of acceptance criteria can significantly increase or decrease project quality costs. The result of the deliverables satisfying all acceptance criteria implies that the needs of the customer have been met. Formal acceptance (Section 5.4.3.1) validates that the acceptance criteria have been satisfied. The product scope description, embodied in the project scope statement (Section 5.2.3.1), will often contain details of technical issues and other concerns that can affect quality planning.

PMP Exam Change

The Project Management Professional (PMP)® credential examination will be revised in 2011. This is based on updates to the professional role of a PMP® credential holder recently found by PMI’s Role Delineation Study (RDS).

The new examination is scheduled for release on 31 August 2011. This means that the last day to take the current PMP examination is 30 August 2011.

The exam will still be based on PMBOK Guide Version 4. However, PMI has adviced that about 30% of the PMP Exam questions will get changed to reflect the project manager’s role as defined by the recent Role Delieation Study.

Education and experience eligibility requirements for the PMP credential will not change, however.

What has changed in the PMP Exam?
Certain areas of the PMP exam will be tested in a different way because an existing domain was seen to be common across all content areas of the exam. Specifically, the Professional and Social Responsibility content area will now be tested in every domain rather than as a separate domain on the exam.

This means that questions from the Professional and Social Responsibility area will now be spread out in each knowledge area and process group. PMI’s Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct should therefore be viewed as now integrated into the day-to-day role of a project manager, emphasizing its importance in each phase of the project lifecycle.

The project management team uses the Planning Process Group and its constituent processes and interactions to plan and manage a successful project for the organization. The Planning Process Group helps gather information from many sources with each having varying levels of completeness and confidence. The planning processes develop the project management plan. These processes also identify, define, and mature the project scope, project cost, and schedule the project activities that occur within the project. As new project information is discovered, additional dependencies, requirements, risks, opportunities, assumptions, and constraints will be identified or resolved. The multi-dimensional nature of project management causes repeated feedback loops for additional analysis. As more project information or characteristics are gathered and understood, follow-on actions may be required. Significant changes occurring throughout the project life cycle trigger a need to revisit one or more of the planning processes and, possibly, some of the initiating processes.  The frequency of iterating the planning processes is also affected. For example, the project management plan, developed as an output of the Planning Process Group, will have an emphasis on exploring all aspects of the scope, technology, risks, and costs

While planning the project, the project team should involve all appropriate stakeholders, depending upon their influence on the project and its outcomes. The project team should use stakeholders in project planning since the stakeholders have skills and knowledge that can be leveraged in developing the project management plan and any subsidiary plans. The project team must create an environment in which stakeholders can contribute appropriately.

The project life cycle defines the phases that connect the beginning of a project to its end. For example, when an organization identifies an opportunity to which it would like to respond, it will often authorize a feasibility study to decide whether it should undertake the project. The project life cycle definition can help the project manager clarify whether to treat the feasibility study as the first project phase or as a separate, stand-alone project.
